Such contexts included certain points in the life cycle, some occupational groupings, certain locations and associational forms, and the reading of some types of literature. 111 Sports have not as yet been analysed in such ways, although a wide range of sources allow their exploration. These sources range from newspaper and sporting magazine material, and institutional sources such as sports club minutes, to more private sources such as diaries and memoirs. So what follows provides tantalizing hints and raises questions rather than providing answers.

76 Not just class, but also gender, generation, religion, urban space or territory, language, the use of power, education and ethnicity help to determine social and cultural allegiances in complex ways. Though commonalities created by the world of work, material existence and resulting social position, were still often the strongest, differences in consumption and life within the middle classes also need more consideration. All these complex elements now need to be linked more precisely to the forces making for class cloning and sporting conformity.

Cunningham’s preliminary model of middle-class sporting leisure, whilst undoubtedly useful, still has a number of deficiencies. Firstly the model is largely driven by source availability. It was easier for historians to assess the moral revolution of evangelicalism and its impact on the working classes than its real impact upon the middle classes. Such supposed ‘middle-class respectability’ was censorious but it was much more prone to be used to interfere with the leisure of other classes than to attack the sports of the middle classes themselves.
