In contrast during the same year Cladosporium spores were recovered only 16 times on Durham slides. The percent 53 contribution of this spore type to total counts was proportion~ly low. When compared to that of temperate zones (4) the pollen deposition on our area seems rather light, while the fungus spore deposition appears average or high. Algae, insects, acari and various types of plant debris are not uncommonly recovered from our samplers. Summary Air sampling studies carried out in Caracas, Venezuel~ indicate that in this tropical area pollen and fungus spores of allergenic potential are airborne throughout the year.

J Botany Department, University of the OFS, Bloemfontein, Introduction lhe study of fossil pollen and spores has become one of the most important techniques for the reconstruction of palaeoenvironments, especially during the Quaternary. Ihe interpretation of fossil pollen assemblages in terms of vegetation can, however, be seriously affected because of over- or under representation of pollen taxa.
